Due to their compact size cabinet scanners can be used in all areas including mailrooms, reception areas and goods in.

Although smaller, these cabinet x-ray scanners will still produce high resolution images allowing you to detect explosives (IEDs), chemical and biological threats, weapons, drugs and malicious items. With training, provided procedures and advice from our team your operators and staff will be able to identify these threats and know how to respond.

Important: The risk during normal operation is extremely low because cabinet systems are fully enclosed and fitted with safety interlocks that stop x-ray production if doors or access panels are opened.

Who ensures cabinet x-ray systems are radiation safe?

The Health and Safety executive (HSE) regulates the manufacture of the products and the use of the products.

Is it safe to stand near a cabinet x-ray system during operation?

Yes.

The manufacturers are required to certify that their products meet the radiation safety performance standard for cabinet x-ray machines. Specifically, the standard requires that the radiation that is emitted from a cabinet x-ray system not to exceed an exposure of 0.5 millisievert per hour at any point five centimetres from the external surface. Our cabinet x-ray systems emit less than this limit. In addition, the standard also requires safety features that include warning lights, warning labels and interlocks all of which can be found on our equipment.

The average person in the UK receives a dose of about 360 millirem of radiation per year from background radiation. Background radiation is radiation that is always present in the environment. 80% of that exposure comes from natural sources: radon gas, the human body, outer space, rocks and soil. The remaining 20% comes from man-made radiation sources, primarily medical x-rays.

Is it safe for pregnant women to be near an operating cabinet x-ray system?

Yes.

The limit on radiation emission established by the performance standard is sufficiently restrictive that there is no additional hazard for specific populations such as children or pregnant women.

Do cabinet x-ray operators need to wear a radiation badge?

No.

Staff are not required by the HSE to wear badges.

Is food, drink, medicine, or cosmetics safe after x-ray inspection?

There are no known adverse effects from eating food, drinking beverages, using medicine or applying cosmetics that have been irradiated by a cabinet x-ray system used for security screening.

The radiation dose typically received by objects scanned by a cabinet x-ray system is 1 millirad or less. The average dose rate from background radiation is 360 millirad per year. The minimum dose used in food irradiation for food preservation, destruction of parasites or pathogens is 30,000 rad.
